About a week ago, I had the opportunity to interview Kelsey's best friend Judy Slow. She is a fitness trainer at the UFC gym in Miami Florida and has made cameos in multiple episodes. Hunter and I have grown close to a lot of the people on the show and that includes Judy especially. Wether she was giving us amazing advice or just being one of the nicest people I have ever met, she is someone we consider a good friend. After she moved to Miami, her life was chaos and adventure all in one. I thought it'd be perfect to show you why we think she is such an amazing person in ours and Kelsey's lives. So why not let you get to know her more and ask her a few fitness questions? Read on to get a sense of who she is and a little advise about hitting the gym!
Me: What exactly inspired you to start working out?
Judy: Friends had eating disorders or some weren't eating at all. They were happy when we started working out. I loved the environment and so when I was working for friends, I went up to Pennsylvania I was an assistant coach. I loved working with that. Then I moved back to Florida, Sarasota to be exact. That's when I met Kelsey and we became really close. We met before the show even was a thing. At that time I coached a lot of group classes and got my USAW certificate. The UFC corporation that I work for now is just really good too. I'm here and I love it!
Me: What's your favorite go to workout?
Judy: Squats!
Me: What are your thoughts on opening your own gym?
Judy: I don't necessarily want to open my own gym because I like being on the floor, working out. I don't want to be behind the computer, but I don't wanna say I wouldn't do it. I feel a lot of growth here.
Me: Any advice for beginners just starting to workout?
Judy: Don't give up! If it was easy then everyone would be doing it. It's tough the first three weeks. You'll be sore in the beginning. It'll go away though if you keep it up. I listen to motivational videos just to get out of bed quicker sometimes. It all starts in your mindset. Change your mindset!
Me: Do you have any eating tips for beginners too?
Judy: Fruits, oats, anything energy giving. I'll buy and rinse a big bag of grapes and put them in like, six little baggies. So you can basically grab and go. A lot of people's excuses are they don't have time or they have a busy schedule. So if it's easy, you'll be more likely to do it.
Me: Would you ever want to be on the show as a main cast member?
Judy: If they asked, I'd say yeah. For sure.
Me: What is it like being able to guest star with your best friend (Kelsey)?
Judy: It's fun and it's real! People think it's all scripted. It's cool. Just us doin' us, just with cameras around now. Being there in the intense scenes, it was hard for her. Still is hard for her. Being her best friend, I really do hold her hand and try to help her through tough stuff. Our friendship hasn't been changed or challenged by the show and that's so good. I'm glad.
Me: Has the distance made a difference on your friendship?
Judy: Not hanging out sucks, but we are both really busy right now. We facetime to keep up and we are always planning the next visit.
Me: How different is Miami from the Key?
Judy: So different! The Key is so laid back and chill, so small compared. Miami has so much potential and it is so much bigger. It's the perfect place for me and where I am at in my life right now. It was very scary going with my gut and moving out here. It's been stressful, but I am so glad I went for it.
Me: Last question sadly, but what was it like losing people you were so close to and how did you get through it? (@allaboutsiestakey 's question)
Judy: So I lost my mom and brother. Honestly, I was so close to them and it was hard. It's made me a new person. It's made me help and influence so many people too. I see things so differently now. I'm thankful for the struggle. I can't stay sad or be negative. So many times growing up I had nothing. I had to put the food on the table for my younger brother. None of my family went to college. It was messy. I told myself, there is something more out there. I got through it and it's made me so strong. It's made me work so much harder. It isn't easy at all. I hold onto the good times. But they are looking down on me. It hurts, but you have to get through it. Make them proud. Stay kind, keep a positive mindset. Stay focused.
Me: You are so incredibly strong Judy and we love you. I really appreciate getting to sit down and video chat with you, interviewing and all. Thank you so much!
Judy is now in Miami and she is thriving at the UFC gym.
